“You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?”-David Byrne

As a young artist, I had no idea where my creative side would take me, furniture was never in the plan. I was the kid that simply loved to create. I fell in love with drawing, and decided to go to art school to see what I could do.

I focused on illustration in college and specifically wood block printmaking. The art of relief printmaking “carving from a block of wood to print like a stamp,” grabbed hold, and that became my all encompassing focus. This also was my first dive into working with wood, and learning about carving.

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Visual Arts in 1996. Majoring in Illustration with a minor in printmaking. After freelance illustrating for a few years, and showing in various art galleries, and shows featuring my woodcuts, I started to dabble in making frames and simple furniture pieces. Simple tables, and mortise and tenon frames that showcased the beauty of the wood, as well as adding found objects like old iron grating into the pieces. It just evolved from there.

I became a self taught furniture maker. I studied the techniques of the past that intrugued me. The craftsmanship and joinery of the Arts and Crafts period, exploring quarter sawn oak and cherry started it……

And then a few trips to Europe, and a visit to Japan happened, and I fell in love in a whole new way with design. A love affair with the Art Nouveau movement. The organic lines, curves in the architecture, furniture, and posters, never cease to excite me. This style worked to merge high art and craftsmanship in new and exciting ways. My pieces still tend to borrow ideas from this era.

My current work may hold inspiration in the flowing curves of Nouveau, yet feel grounded with a Japanese Modernism approach. Joinery details, clean flowing lines, figured hardwoods, and unique designs are what I focus on.

In the year 2000 I started my studio. I learned as I built furniture pieces, as well as built-in cabinets. I continued this work for several years, but like many people, I had to make a change due to the 08/09 financial crisis. I took a break from being self employed and spent some time doing finish carpentry for a commercial general contractor. I learned much from this role. During this time, I also realized how much I missed all aspects of the artistic process and working directly for my patrons.

I’m grateful for my time in commercial work. It gave me many new ideas, techniques, and approaches that wouldn’t have happened any other way. I’m also glad to be back to work for you and create original work that feeds the soul.

And so I introduce…… Flow Creative Design!

I look forward to the chance to work with you on a unique project, all your own.

The Other Stuff

What do I do when I’m not creating art or furniture? I’m frequently creating music in some sense. My other passion is Afro Cuban percussion and drumming. Usually in a latin, Cuban, funk style of some sort. I also love seeing live music, collecting music, gardening, hiking, photography, scuba diving in warm waters, traveling, making art. And all spent with my lovely wife Heather, and pups Benny and Frida!

We love animals, and especially our pups! Benny is a rescue Beagle/Sheltie mix. And little Frida is Prembroke Corgi. We enjoy hiking the north shore trails of Minnesota with these two when we can!
